"Battered and bruised we left Havenwood, only to find a new terror lurking its suburbs."
- The three companions must lead the remaining citizens of Havenwood into the ruins of Hillsdale, to
possibly rescue their cousin, only to find he may be one of the Crazies. Can they save Joshua from the
Horror of Hillsdale or will they fall victim to it. Join the companions as they seek answers in Hillsdale.
Story Thus Far:
Entering the Havenwood Suburbs a new terror reveals itself: 30 minutes to contact.
The Hummer rumbled across the battered and broken city. A city torn apart by its government and left for
dead. Emily, the now de facto navigator and healer, drove slowly down the streets, eyes searching the
ruins. Smoke drifted up into the air where the Air Strike had decimated the city. Everything was in ruins
and no one, save themselves and the few they'd saved, remained alive. She hit a particularly large pothole
jostling everyone in the back of the Hummer.
Marcus landed hard on the bed of the vehicle. He barely grunted when the impact numbed his arm and
hand. Looking up he saw the fires, and smoke drifting up into the sky. He'd never seen anything like it
before, an entire city reduced to ruin by the military. There was almost nothing left of it, and what remained
was being destroyed today. The black hawk helicopters were thick in the air, swooping down to lay waste to
what remained. He could also see the missiles streaking in from what he thought was the 5th Z Company's
new base. They sure are set on destroying this whole thing. Marcus thought. He mulled over the one
conversation he'd had with the Lieutenant Jacobs a shudder running through him.
"I'm sorry Marcus, there's nothing we can do. If we're going to save this country and possibly the world
we've got to destroy this city. The contagion is too great here. There's nothing we can do." the sadness
never reaching his eyes.
"Yea whatever. For Fracksake! There's people out there, trapped in that hell and you people are just
going to leave them." Marcus' anger bled into his words. "Bang!" his hand slammed down making Jacobs
jump. "Frack, what if we go in and get them. Will you give us the gear we need?" He stared hard at the
man, who seemed to shrink before his gaze.
Jacobs was quite for a time and then responded, "I can't promise you help but I suppose I owe it to the
citizens. Ok Marcus, I'll arm you, give you one tester and back you from our position here." he said
extending his hand. Coldly, Marcus grabbed the hand and firmly shook it. "You know you won't make it out
of there." emotionless, cold as if dead inside.
"Yea whatever. You just make sure you back us from here and if we get to the barricade" he said pointing
at the map on the table, "you let us in." Marcus said without fear.
"We'll help you as best as we can but the Air Strike in coming and can't be stopped. You've only got maybe
thirty minutes before it's here, we're pulling out in 25." Jacobs said matter of fact.
Marcus nodded and moved out calling his people over. He wouldn't order them into the hell, but knew
they'd go. After a quick discussion they'd all agreed to go in, and save who ever they could. Looking at his
watch he shook his head. Twenty-five minutes, not a hell of a lot of time.
"Bang!" the loud crash brought him back, and caused him more pain as he slammed into the bed of the
Hummer. "Can't you drive around those?" he yelled up to Emily.
"I'm trying but I don't think we can afford the time to be careful." She said pointing up.
Looking up Marcus and Jack saw it, and knew she was right. A second Air Strike was incoming. They could
see the plains descending on the town. And they were headed their way. "Go Emily, gas it!"
What'ya think I'm doing now? "Come on baby, give it all ya got!" she said slamming her foot to the floor
again. It seemed like the vehicle knew they were in trouble and maybe gave it just a bit more. They sped
out of the main city, as the world seemed to catch fire, the thunder of god hammering them as they drove
away.
Darkness crept slowly across the landscape. The orange tinged black pillars of smoke rose into the air,
ghastly columns of death and destruction. The whole of Havenwood was being destroyed, wiped off the
face of the earth and the men responsible thought nothing of it. Bet they woulda used a Frackin Nuke if
they could have. Some company of saviors they are. The 5th... what a joke! Marcus thought angrily. He
knew deep down that it was probably better they had destroyed the town instead of wasting lives, but he
didn't have to like it. "Em," paused. "Emily!" he shouted.
She could see them, the final wave of planes, descending in the Hummer's rear-view mirror. Come on! she
thought hammering down on the gas pedal for all she was worth. Again they found themselves in dire
straights. Sure they'd saved several people from a horrible death but would it kill them in the end. "Marcus,
sixty seconds till they strike!" she yelled back.
"Go Em! Do what you gotta do!" he replied.
Counting in her head, she knew they probably wouldn't make it. The planes were descending, beginning to
unleash their death. Sixty... Fifty... Fourty... Gotta take that corner, maybe it'll hold back the blasts. Hope
the First Savings and Load holds. "Hang on!" she screamed and pulled for all she was worth. The Hummer
took the corner, protested, tipped up on two wheels, sped down the street and straight into a dead end.
The world became an inferno, so hot and intense the sidewalks melted, and the buildings at its center were
vaporized. Too late to correct their course the Hummer slammed into the wall, blackness taking them into its
depths. She had been the first to come around, her seatbelt protecting her from the worst of it. She looked
over at Chen, the foreign exchange student. She was alive, the kid in the back had suffered the worst and
was dead.
Then she could hear her name, distant but insistent. It brought her back from horrific memories that kept
creeping into her mind. "What!" she yelled. And then she saw it, a semi truck sideways on the road and
she veered to the right. "Hang on!" she screamed.
"Damn it! Not again!" Jack barked holding on to the side of the vehicle. It swung wildly around the back
tires spinning and finally catching, the lurched around the semi truck and came to a stop. "What the Hell
were you doing?" Jack yelled at her.
She began to cry. It was horrible, she couldn't get the image of the little boy out of her head, the others that
had died because she chose to turn a corner and slammed into the building. "I can.. I can't go on like this!"
she yelled. No one spoke and for the longest time the only sounds were her sobs and the engine quietly
ticking over.
"You ok sis?" Jack finally spoke.
"Yea... just gotta get "Tough Soldier", at least that's what Lieutenant Jacobs said. Yea, I'm ok. Just all this,
it's almost too much." she said wiping away her tears.
"Yea sis, I know. You want me to drive?" Jack asked softly.
She chortled aloud at that, "Not with that broken leg I gave you." a smile spread across her face. Her mirth
caught and soon they were all laughing, the tension of the last few days melting away.
Soon Marcus ordered them to setup camp. They all jumped out and set to work. The three others that
made it through with them helping as best as they could. They'd done it, they'd saved a few people from the
military, almost at too high a price but now, in this place with everyone laughing it seemed worth it somehow.
Eventually, having settled in and watches assigned, the companions talked quietly around the fire as
Genevieve patrolled along the roadway. It was Marcus that noticed the sign, and spoke up. "Look, that sign
says fifteen miles to Hillsdale. Didn't you tell me you had an Uncle there?"
"Yea we do!" Emily said excitedly. "You think we can go there?"
Marcus looked at everyone, they were beaten. Now wasn't the time to go racing off in search of maybes.
"Let's get some rest and in the morning we'll see. Today was a real piece of work." he paused looking at
everyone. They all knew he was right. "Ok Jack you and... " and the watches were handed out. The next
morning he awoke to the smells of meat cooking and smiled. Someone must have caught something in the
night. "Hey ya." he said smiling and rising to meet the day, and as far as he could see it looked like it was
going to be a great day. "Hey Em, what day is it?" he asked not being able to remember.
Emily got out her journal and was shocked to see that she'd written everything down from yesterday.
Turning the page she pulled out her pen and titled the page, responding to Marcus, "It's day eighteen."
The companions had all discussed the issue of traveling to another city. They had become accustomed to
the dangers and were well supplied. After expressing their votes, two yeas with the new comers dissenting,
Marcus made up his mind. "I've heard what you all have to say. I'm not surprised that you three don't want
to journey into a city especially since it took us to get you out of the last one and we barely did that. I can't
leave you out here in the wilderness and we've a job to do. We have to find their parents. It's what we've
set out to do. Their cousin lives there, and well frankly with the military's resupply we have the ammunition.
In fact it's better quality than what we're used to. So we're going in. You three will be given pistols from the
supply and guarded closely. It's important that you follow orders correctly and quietly." he finished.
"What if we don't want to go?" Chen said her first words to the companions meekly.
"Well, then you're free to go. Listen, all of you, I've been chosen leader of the group and you'll have to
accept my decisions. There is no such thing as a democracy, that died eighteen days ago. I've been
chosen leader of this group and you can accept that, recognize that I'll always put the safety of the group
ahead of the individual, even myself. And you'll accept my leadership, or well... you find a new leader and
most likely the group disbands, everyone going in their separate way." he's said it, and now they'd follow him
or it was over. The silence filled the air, breaking point looming on the horizon. Soon the moment of truth
would arrive, would they choose him, or would this be it?
"Well you know I'm with you." Jack said slapping his leg.
"Me too, of course you knew that." Em said with mirth.
"I like what you say, but I'm not sure." Harvey said. He'd been the dissenting voice since they'd picked him
up. Two for, one against.
"I'm grateful for what you've done, I owe you my life. But you are correct, I do not have to stay, and if I do I
would only do so if I agreed to follow you. It makes sense that someone has to lead but it's really too soon
for me to blindly be led by you. For now, I'll follow your orders, but know this. If I disagree with the way
you're running things I'll let you know. But yes, I'll follow you." Chen said with conviction. Three for, one
against.
"Aw hell Marcus, I only met you really for the first time today. Jack seems like a great guy, knows tons of
stuff about all kinds a things. Hell, I'm lucky to be alive, and I ain't never seen nuthin like what we're seeing
out there. I doubt I'll be much more than a fishin weight for you guys, but you've done right by me so far it
being one day an all. I can't say no, Hell ya saved my life, well Jack did. An if he says you're alright then I'm
good with that. But Chen's right. Don't expect me not to voice my opinion. But yea, I'm in." Feeny said.
Four for, one against.
"Look people, I'm not asking you to just do what I say. What I am telling you is that if we go on, and I'm the
leader, you follow my directions without question. I don't want to lead you without first taking your input into
consideration. But in tight situations you follow my orders, my lead. I'm not really your General, we work as
a team but every team needs a Captain and well... I'm it." Marcus said with finality.
"Well I'm not willing to follow what someone says just because. So it looks like I'm on my own from here.
That's ok, I'm used to the wilderness. I used to hunt, fish and camp about fifteen times a year. I'll be alright.
Just hand me over a weapon and I'll be on my way." Harvey said holding out his hand, as if expecting to be
handed a gun.
"I'm sorry Harvey, I'm not giving you a weapon." Marcus said coldly. "You're free to leave and we'll give you
plenty of food and water but you're not getting weapons, not from our stock." Harvey was standing close to
the edge of the Hummer, by Jack who had been put in charge of the weapon supply. "Don't do it!" Marcus
yelled at him. Everyone seemed to freeze, a deathly silence filling the camp. And then Harvey moved,
almost like lightning. He grabbed the weapons cache from Jack and reached into it. As he turned to face
Marcus, a sickening click could be heard coming from the bag. Everyone knew he was preparing to fire, to
kill Marcus. Suddenly a loud boom shook everyone. They all turned to Marcus. "Harvey man, why'd you
make me do that?" Their eyes turned back to Harvey, he'd been thrown back and was laying on the ground,
half his head was blown off. The barrel of the shotgun was sticking out of the weapons bag he was
clutching. Marcus had killed him, and somehow seemed a little colder, a little harder for it, but he was alive.
"Ok everyone, grab your gear we're moving out."
Shocked Em finally said, "Are.. aren't we going to bury him?"
"Nope. It'd take too much of our time and energy. And if we're going to make it into the city before night,
with any hope of getting out before dark we gotta go right now." He said with finality, argument over.
No one else argued, and they all piled into the Hummer. Just before they drove off Marcus set Harvey on
fire, to prevent him from feeding the dead.
They moved through the city, seemingly empty except for one Creeper Chen stumbled upon when they'd
stopped for everyone to take a break and use the restroom. She'd almost been attacked and it was only
sheer dumb luck that she killed it, blowing off its head with the Colt 45 she'd borrowed. It nearly took her
hand off but it'd done the job. As they came around the bend and entered what had been the gated
community where Joshua, Em and Jack's cousin, lived they weren't sure if he was going to still be alive.
Many houses had been burned or torched in some way. There was debris everywhere and the dead littered
the streets. "This ain't good." Em said quietly.
"You got dat right!" Marcus said. "Drive on slowly, and people... be ready for anything. Get your weapons
out and be ready to fire. Jack you and Scott take the left side, Chen and I'll take the right side. Don't
change your weapon side unless I tell you to. And if I do, don't point your weapon barrel through anyone,
it's how people get killed. Damn! We're definitely going to have to give a class on gun safety."
They drove on without incident, disembarked from their vehicle when the street became blocked and moved
towards Joshua's house. As they walked up Apple Lane, they saw two police cars smashed together and
took refuge behind them. "That's Tanner Street." Jack said. "That's Joshua's street." Looking up Tanner
Street everyone but Jack and Marcus became stunned. There Joshua was, mowing the neighborhood
lawns. Calmly walking back and forth. "What the hell is he doing?" Jack whispered. The group having now
huddled behind the burnt out police cars.
"Hell if I know." Marcus replied.
"Guess I should go talk to him." Em said.
"Wait!" Marcus whispered harshly. They all turned to see several Creepers and what appeared to be the
largest Mutant they'd encountered yet. All of them moving towards Joshua. With an insane look in his eyes
Joshua screamed, his massive muscles lifting up the lawn mower and he charged. "Shit!" Weighing the
odds that Joshua was infected and what they'd come to call a Crazie, someone that was dead but still
retained their memories and you didn't know it until it was too late, or was he still Joshua. He'd been a
landscaper and seemed to still be doing that. "Aw hell people. Let's go save him." Marcus decided, figuring
if the Zombies were attacking then Joshua couldn't be one of them, hopefully.
The companions raced around the car and once again into the waiting Zombie Horde. Hopefully Marcus
hadn't committed them to certain death.
