Thorin and the many other planets in close proximity to Terra, were the first planets colonized during latter part of
the 23rd century, known as the Exodus period. Even horror stories, like that of bull-sized predators who
devoured the entire colony on Thorin, did not dampen the widespread desire to flee the politics and pollution of
Terra.

The Hegemony library on Thorin was the largest library ever built. Just outside Ecol City, it was constantly
expanded until it filled more than 100 buildings clustered around the huge domed Central Library. The proud
people of Thorin boasted that it contained a copy of every published book. Though that claim may not be true,
the library was a mind-boggling warehouse of information. During the coup, the Second Amaris Dragoons set it
on fire. That single act of wanton violence, consuming every building of the Hegemony Library, set mankind back
hundreds of years.

The University of Thorin, one of the "Golden Ten" universities of the Star League, was nestled in the dark forests
of Thorin's northern continent. The focus was on economics. The university was severely damaged during the
Amaris coup and was later abandoned. The forest has since taken over the deserted campus.

Ecol City is the capital of Thorin, and is situated on the southern most of the two continents.

The Dublin Swamps, which run south and west of Ecol City, are notorious for their difficulty of navigation and as
the breeding ground of insects of phenomenal size. The equatorial swamps are nearly two hundred kilometers in
diameter, with island-like hills that rise from the shadowy mire.

[3062] Founded in 2832, the Flight Academy of Thorin gained a reputation for producing excellent aerospace
pilots and DropShip crews. However, the academy sustained heavy damage during the Succession Wars, limiting
its enrolment. The resulting repairs were deemed prohibitively expensive, and so the school limped on without
them. As a result, even when the demand for naval crews increased in the '40s and '50s, there was never any
likelihood of upgrading the Thorin facility. Instead, the LAAF chose to build a new facility at Alarion and slowly
downgrade Thorin. The last class entered the academy in summer 3060 and will graduate in June 3063. At that
point, the remaining equipment will relocate to Alarion, as will most of the instructors. Those choosing to retire
from the LAAF have been offered employment with Christofiori Express, a Thorin-based shipping company.

[3132]An early colony world when humanity first reached for the stars, almost a thousand years ago, Thorin was
a beautiful, terrestrial planet, blessed by an abundance of resources including rich mineral deposits, contamination
by corporate industrialization, the early settlers established planetary zoning laws that restricted heavy industries to
the northern continent of Olympus. By contrast, the southern continent, Freda, was reserved for those seeking a
more agrarian way of life. As a result of this charter, high-tech cities came to dot the Olympian shoreline and river
ways by the time of the Star League, while large agricultural communes and logging industries formed the
backbone of the Fredan economy. The Terran Hegemony established Thorin as a jewel of education and learning
when they built the massive University of Thorin, a liberal arts school, in the Remington Valley. Located a short
distance away from Ecol City, the planetary capital and site of the legendary Public Library of Thorin, the
University of Thorin held to the highest academic standards of the day, but was destroyed along with the Library
during the planet's occupation by Amaris troops. Today, only the ruins of the university in the heart of what is now
Remington Forest, the Library Monument outside Ecol City, and the remains of the massive Fortress Laiacona, a
partially destroyed Star League Castle Brian, testify to the lost treasures of the Star League. Ironically, though the
University and the Library were destroyed during the Amaris occupation before the collapse of the Star League,
the fortress did not meet its fate until the Word of Blake Jihad, when Blakist agents unleashed a tactical
thermonuclear weapon against the command post of the planetary militia. The similar devastation wrought on
many of Thorin's Olympus cities forced much of the surviving population to relocate off-world or to Freda, which
survived unscathed through two of the worst military campaigns to darken human history. Today, even though the
majority of Thorin's population now lives on the more habitable continent of Freda or in small mining habitats in
the system's asteroid field, and though most business is now conducted in the Fredan city of Port Sumpter, Ecol
City on Olympus remains the planetary capital.

[3132] Thorin was originally part of the Lyran Alliance until the creation of The Republic. Thorin became part of
Prefecture X under the control of The Republic. After the fall of the HPG Network Fortress Republic was
created and many of the worlds under its control were set free.
[3135] Thorin remained part of The Republic and is now under its protection, inside the Fortress Republic.
