In late 3012, Prince Ian Davion received word that the Kuritans were building huge storage depots on the Planet
of Halstead Station. If complete, the storage center would vastly speed up re-supply for the DCMS. Prince Ian
had decided to keep that storage center from being built, and had immediately begun to make plans for a strike at
that world.
When Prince Ian died, it fell to Prince Hanse to continue the plans for a strike against that world. In the same
period, MIIO was reporting that Combine construction crews had stumbled across the ruins of a Star League-era
university housing a huge, unopened vault. Realizing how important the contents of that vault might be, Hanse
rushed ahead with the raid plans and decided to personally lead the attack.
What the Prince thought would be an in-and-out raid turned into a month long battle. Luck was with the young
Prince, however. He and his troops managed to not only destroy the Kurita supply center, but to seize the
Halstead Collection, perhaps the most important Star League treasure yet discovered.
When Prince Davion's 'Mechs broke into the vault, he and his men found rows upon rows of books and
computer memory cubes. Hanse and his troops carried off as many of the books as time would permit, burning
what they could not carry. Unofficial sources say that over three thousand books and other materials were taken
away from the vault, most of them on highly technical subjects.
The books have proved so significant that the public hailed Prince Hanse as "the Victor of Halstead Station."
Capitalizing on this public admiration, he unveiled his plans for the creation of the New Avalon Institute of
Science. Today, the Halstead Collection is housed in the NAIS in an environmentally controlled library.
[3132] The founding of Halsted Station traces back to the early days of human expansion, when the growing
Ozawa Mercantile Association sought to ensure its dominion of the “northwest” region of the galaxy, through a
chain of stations under its complete control. Unfortunately, the system chosen for one of the way stations lacked
one small requirement: a habitable world. Because it was rich in minerals, particularly in the asteroid belt and on
the third planet, a poisonous rock encased in a deadly argon-cyanide atmosphere, the system could not be
ignored as a candidate. Engineers under the command of Geoffrey Halsted, one of the Association’s more
visionary directors, established Halsted Station in 2207 and renamed the world after their new colony. Halsted
Station, more than merely a domed settlement on a poisonous wasteland, was actually a labyrinth of underground
tunnels; huge surface and subsurface storehouses; and massive, environmentally sealed habitats that when
completed, covered nearly three percent of the tiny planet’s surface. When the growing Draconis Combine finally
crushed the Ozawas, Halsted Station, as one of the Association’s few surviving facilities, fell into the hands of
House Kurita, which quickly assigned a significant portion of the ever-expanding facilities to military use. Over the
centuries, Halsted Station has seen use as a military supply base, a maximum-security prison, and a place where
dishonored soldiers were sent to reflect upon their mistakes. Though Halsted Station continued to expand as
extensive mining drilled out more underground tunnels, the quality of life for its inhabitants gradually began to
decline. The worst came in 3089, when a massive earthquake shook the entire city, rupturing its southeastern
quadrant and killing thousands of residents. Geologists, appalled by the devastation, attributed the quake to a
subterranean explosion that was never satisfactorily explained. When the world fell under the sway of Devlin
Stone’s Republic of the Sphere, the time-worn colony was renovated by the settlers who were relocated there.
Today, Halsted Station remains the largest population center on the planet, though a secondary city, known as
Stone’s Dream, was recently founded on the far side of the Scalding Sea, the single large ocean that dominates
much of the planet’s southern hemisphere.
[3132] Halstead Station was originally part of the Draconis Combine. After the creation of The Republic it
became part of Prefecture II, under the control of The Republic. After the fall of the HPG Network Fortress
Republic was created and many of the worlds under its control were set free.
[3135] Halstead Station witnessed the release of many planets from the control of The Republic.
[3135] Halstead Station once again became part of the Draconis Combine, House Kurita.
